Ackroyd was appointed chief executive of Scottish Water in 2008.
Prior to joining Scottish Water, Ackroyd was a director of Yorkshire Water from 1996 and was also chairman of Water UK from 2006 to 2008.
Scottish Water’s executive leadership team and its chair Ronnie Mercer will take over with immediate effect.
