Following a competitive tender process, Serco’s proposal was judged best value for money by the council. The contract will commence April 2012 and will see around 90 staff transfer to Serco under the TUPE agreement.

The contract will run for an initial term of eight years, with an option to extend for a further eight years. Under the agreement, Serco will collect materials from 127,000 households, a third of which are multi-occupancy properties.

Serco will also be engaging with the ‘Wandsworth Challenge’, a council-led initiative which is changing the way the local authority provides services and works with local people, giving more power to community groups and residents.

The council’s environment spokesman, Cllr Jonathan Cook, said: “This contract guarantees weekly collections for our residents and delivers significant environmental benefits from a new fleet of dual-use vehicles, which means fewer big vehicles on the borough’s roads.”
