Severn Trent CMS gains accreditation
Severn Trent Water (STW) has claimed to be the first UK water company to achieve industry certification for its Competence Management System (CMS).
Launched in 2009, the CMS, which has been approved by Defra, the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) and the Energy and Utility Skills Group, aims to help the waste management and water industries demonstrate that their operators have the technical competence required to satisfy environmental permitting regulations.
It was developed in response to a request from the waste industry for an alternative method to the Certificate of Technical Competence (COTC).
Three pilots were launched to test the system, with the CMS applied by STW achieving certification, which enables them to comply with the conditions set out in their Environmental Permit and has been successfully audited by the certification body, NQA.
STW environmental & waste management advisor Mel Mammone, said: “We are delighted to be the trailblazer for the water industry and to be the first to have achieved CMS certification.
“Being part of the CMS pilots was a fantastic experience and ensured that we delivered a great system that makes optimum use of our employees operating within permitted sites.”
