CSC owns 14 prime shopping centres in the UK including Manchester’s Trafford Centre and Lakeside in Essex, attracting over 320m visits a year in total. Across its portfolio of directly managed centres, recycling rates rose to 75% in 2011, up from 71% in the previous year.

Eight of these are now diverting 100% waste from landfill and the company’s aim is to reduce the total amount of landfilled waste from its other outlets to less than 5% by the end of 2014.

In its latest corporate sustainability report, CSC says that each of its shopping centres is provided with bespoke advice and guidance on how to increase and improve upon recycling rates.

The report states: “With the generation of waste outside our control, it is unrealistic to set specific targets for volume, but we do set centre-based targets for those with management responsibility to encourage staff to maximise recycling.”
