SLR to develop island’s waste strategy

SLR Consulting has been appointed by WRAP, on behalf of Defra, to develop a long-term waste strategy for the Isles of Scilly.

Located 28 miles from Land’s End with a population of 2,000, the archipelago has been designated an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Waste from St Mary’s and three of the four other inhabited islands is currently processed through the Council’s incinerator at Porthmellon.

SLR director Andy Street said: “We have previously worked on waste strategies for the island of Gozo, off Malta, and also for the Isle of Man, Guernsey and the Western Isles in Scotland – so are extremely well-versed in developing effective and sustainable strategies for self-contained, ecologically sensitive environments.

“Although the local Council has already instigated effective recycling collection and waste minimisation schemes, the remoteness of the Isles of Scilly relative to the mainland currently undermines the viability of such schemes. Looking forward we will be evaluating a range of medium to long term options which will seek to maximize the benefits of utilizing infrastructure and services available locally and on the mainland.”
