BMC has announced the first deliveries for its latest product, a 26 tonnes 6×4 chassis cab with a low entry cab, designed for municipal applications. Wakefield Metropolitan Borough Council has taken four chassis, with further vehicles going on East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s fleet.

Intended primarily for refuse collection operations, the new vehicle is based on proven drive line technology using the Cummins ISBe4 285hp, 6.7 litre engine. The model has a five-speed Allison World Series automatic box and Hendrickson Norde rubber suspension at the rear, with ZF air suspension at the front end.

BMC says it has used its experience in bus and coach design to produce a stylish, modern front end with excellent access to the three crew seats, all with three point inertia reel safety belts. Driver and crew comfort was a key design criterion, so the standard specification includes air suspended seat, electrically adjustable and heated mirrors, air conditioning and radio/CD player.

Jim Towns, BMC’s director of truck sales, says: “Some key operators and bodybuilders in the UK have been involved in the specification of this vehicle from concept through to final production – they appreciated the clean lines, and consideration given to the driver and crew with excellent visibility, well laid-out instrumentation and practical features like wet weather gear hanging space and drainage.”

He adds that local authorities and private contractors should be reassured by the use of recognisable components such as Meritor rear axles and Hema/ZF steering components. Operation and maintenance has been considered too, with key components that are vulnerable to dirt ingress on landfill sites, such as the ECU, being located at the back of cab next to the stainless steel exhaust stack.

“Input from the body builders has resulted in a purpose-designed electrical interface plug which will help retain the electrical integrity of any conversion on this chassis,” adds Towns.

BMC offers a range of 4×2, 6×2 and 6×4 truck models, complete with a wide range of bodywork. From its headquarters in Coventry, the company has its own fleet of mobile engineers, but can also call on key component suppliers for national support, including Cummins, Eaton, ZF, Bosch and Wabco.
