Superdry signs bag-saving charity pledge

Two weeks before the Scottish carrier bag charge comes into force, fashion brand Superdry has signed up to Zero Waste Scotland's Carrier Bag Commitment.

Legislation passed by the Scottish Government requires all retailers to charge a minimum of 5p for every single-use carrier bag from 20 October.

Signatories to the Carrier Bag Commitment pledge to donate the proceeds from the charge to good causes in Scotland, report on how many bags they’ve sold and how the money has been donated. In return they’ll be able take part in communications activities which promote their business and the causes they’re supporting.

The clothing company has chosen to donate to the Trees for Life charity, chosen via an internal employee vote.

Superdry environmental project officer Paul Thomas said: “Whether it is introducing efficient LED lighting to our stores or buying renewable energy, at Superdry we are always looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact. We therefore welcome the carrier bag charge in Scotland as an opportunity to both reduce a highly visible source of litter and also raise money for a very worthwhile environmental cause.”

Superdry joins organisations including Marks and Spencer, McDonald’s, Holland and Barratt and The Co-operative Group in signing up to the commitment.
