Switzerland harmonises with EU petrol standards

The Swiss government has announced that it will adopt new standards for lead and benzene in petrol and sulphur in diesel fuel from January 2000, in line with the rest of Europe.

From 1 January 2000, leaded petrol will no longer be sold and the benzene content of fuel will be reduced from 5% to 1%. Also, the maximum sulphur content in diesel will be reduced from 500 to 350 mg/kg.

The Swiss Agency for the Environment Forests and Landscape says that special additives will be made available for the few users of older vehicles who still currently need to use leaded petrol.
