Thailand Industrial Estates Authority aims for 14001

The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) has embarked on an ambitious program to have all its operations certified to ISO14001 by 2000.

The manager of the Authority’s environmental division, Ms Kasemsri Homchean, told ASER that certification is being sought for the eight estates owned by the Authority, as well as its Bangkok headquarters. Four of the estates operated on a joint venture basis by the IEAT and private developers are also participating in the push for certification.

The Authority is responsible for various activities on industrial estates, including the granting of land use and operation permits, operating utility systems (including waste treatment systems), monitoring environmental quality, regulating industrial operation and controlling pollution and safety.

As well as encouraging ISO14001 certification, the Authority’s environment division runs monthly seminars and distributes a monthly bilingual newsletter. It also runs an annual environmental awards scheme.
