The hottest year yet in Britain

Scientists at the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia have confirmed that 1999 is likely the warmest year yet for the UK.

Although the summer of 1999 was not exceptionally sweltering, overall temperatures have been high. The year is also likely to be the fourth-warmest ever for the world, which means that eight of the 10 hottest years recorded globally will have occurred in during the 1990s.
