Douglas Whirlwind joins Hart DC’s autumn leaves collection

Phil Whiting, Head of Public Spaces at Fleet, Hampshire based Hart District Council has purchased the UK's first Douglas Whirlwind MV truck mounted road sweeper following its launch at the CIWM Exhibition earlier this year.

The Mercedes mounted sweeper, which will remain in the distinctive Douglas blue pearl paint finish, has already met the challenges of the District’s rural environment by becoming an integral part of its autumn leaf fall collection operations.

Looking to replace an existing sweeper the lease of which was up in the Spring of 2005, Mr Whiting said: “I was very impressed with the features of the Whirlwind and, as it was a demonstrator and immediately available, we had no hesitation in purchasing the unit outright in order the provide addition capacity for the autumn.”

With between 1,500 and 2,000 tons of leaves collected from roads in the District each autumn,
Mr Whiting normally has to hire a supplementary vehicle to cope with the volumes. This year he has saved the hire cost while having a brand new sweeper to supplement his fleet.

“It is an excellent sweeper and has met and exceeded all of our expectations,” he adds. “I was very impressed with the build quality and the levels of service that Douglas is able to offer.”

With its range of standard, high specification features, Douglas Equipment claims that the Whirlwind MV is one of the most significant developments in road sweeper technology for
many years.

“Market research reveals high levels of user dissatisfaction in the UK sweeper market and Douglas has answered this with a high performance, feature-laden sweeper manufactured in co-operation with Elgin, the USA based, world market leading sweeper manufacturer,” says Ron Hopkins, Director, Special Products Division of Douglas Equipment Ltd.

Designed specifically for the UK market place, the Whirlwind MV is stated to offer very low cost
of ownership and market leading ground coverage rates, utilising its powerful turbo charged tier II auxiliary engine and simultaneous dual gutter brush sweep, sweeping at 10mph.

Other pluses claimed for the Douglas machine are that it offers the widest sweeping path in the industry and its unique fan design delivers marketing leading airflow rates and levels of suction.
