Cat launches gas-fuelled gensets

Caterpillar has introduced the Cat G3500C and G3500E Series high efficiency, gas fuelled generator sets. Following extensive field trials with Finning Power Systems, the units are proven to offer one of the highest power densities on the market, the company states.

The range is available in 50 and 60Hz configurations and is specially designed for extended hours distributed generation and CHP applications. Delivering up to 43.5% engine efficiency, the units provide one of the lowest electricity costs in the distributed generation market.

Both E and C Series engines are driven by the Cat ADEM III digital microprocessor control system, providing automatic, integrated management of major functions, enabling broad operating flexibility whilst maintaining optimum fuel economy and tight emissions control.

An exclusive air fuel ratio controller monitors charge air density and maintains NOx within the tightest available tolerance under all ambient conditions.
As well as attaining the highest efficiencies on natural gas, all units have been designed to work with low energy fuels such as landfill and biogas and will maintain full output even at the low methane qualities experienced in these applications.

Andy Chinnery, Finning Power Systems, Gas Projects Sales Manager, commented:
“The new range draws on the proven pedigree of the successful Cat G3500 series engine which is renowned for its robust lower end. All new units feature a specially designed, two-stage, high volume air intake system, enabling efficient air flow and increasing the density of air/fuel charge for maximum efficiency and performance. With advanced ignition and the latest microprocessor controls, the G3500C and G3500E Series engines now produce up to 105kW per cylinder.”

The new series also minimises downtime for planned maintenance. Lower N0x formation and oil temperatures help to reduce nitration and oxidation, ensuring around 50 % longer oil change intervals. This is combined with special spark plugs and cylinder components to significantly extend service intervals.
The units in the G3500C and E Series are: G3512C/E rated at 1.2Mwe; G3516C/E rated at 1.6Mwe; and G3520C/E, rated at 2.0MWe.
