Greenpeace to open Bangkok office

The international environmental organisation, Greenpeace, is increasing its activities in Asia and has plans to open a Bangkok office.

“The formalities have not gone through yet, but that is the intention,” a Greenpeace International spokesperson in Amsterdam told edie.

At the moment, campaigners based in Australia cover Asia. Thus far, Greenpeace has focused its Asian campaigns on toxic waste and climate change. “These campaigns may expand when the Bangkok office is set up,” says the spokesperson.

Greenpeace protests against toxic waste dumping in Asia and the exporting of ‘dirty’ technology to Asian countries. Recent actions have highlighted the role Japan’s economic aid agencies have played in exporting Japanese incineration technology to Thailand. Greenpeace alleges that Japan is exporting incineration technology that its own citizens have rejected as too polluting. To ensure a high profile for the campaign, the NGO’s Rainbow Warrior ship has embarked on an Asian tour.
