Millenium Bug may wreak ‘environmental havoc’

Contingency plans and damage limitation exercises, rather than a full Y2K fix, are now becoming the objectives of many organisations in water treatment, electricity generation, pollution control, and chemical manufacturing industries, who are now realising that they have done too little too late to beat the bug.


The US EPA’s office of solid waste and emergency response is preparing for possible multiple chemical releases, and recognises its response to environmental impacts may be hampered by failures in other infrastructure. There is also widespread concern that countries outside the USA could face ‘environmental havoc’ , according to this month’s Hot Article from Environmental Science and Technology.
