Global Reporting Initiative launched in London

The project, originally launched in autumn 1997 by Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies CERES, is the result of collaboration with UNEP, World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, Stockholm Environment Institute, Imperial College of Science, Technology, and Medicine, and NGOs from around the world.

The conference saw publication of a draft set of sustainability reporting guidelines that are intended for comment and pilot testing. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) seeks to encourage companies and other stakeholders to review and pilot-test the guidelines during 1999, and to return feedback on their experiences. As a result of this information, the Guidelines will be revised and re-released in early 2000.

In the mean time, GRI will work on critical aspects such as verification, implications for specific sectors, potential sector-specific reporting activities, and North-South implications. All interested parties are invited to actively participate in the process.
