Unite and RenewableUK pledge to boost green jobs
The UK's largest trade union Unite has formed an alliance with RenewableUK in a bid to generate "tens of thousands" of green jobs over the next decade.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the two organisations yesterday (February 27), committing them to campaign together to ensure that the development of the UK’s renewable energy industry provides significant benefits to businesses.
The alliance recognises the potential of the sector to create long-term skilled employment for the UK and to help boost economic growth and employment.
RenewableUK chief executive Maria McCaffery, said: “The expansion of the wind, wave and tidal industry has the potential to generate up to 120,000 jobs over the next ten years, both directly and through the UK-based supply chain that is growing alongside the industry.”
Unite national officer for energy Kevin Coyne added that Unite is “exceptionally mindful of the massive potential for growth and employment the renewable energy sector provides”, adding that it is “committed to supporting the UK wind, wave and tidal industries to ensure that they create long term skilled employment opportunities”.
