United Biscuits slashes carbon footprint with new trailers

The UK's leading biscuit manufacturer is adding 62 longer trailers to its lorry fleet which will save 450,000 miles per year and reduce annual carbon emissions by 618 tonnes.

United Biscuits (UB), which produces McVitie’s Digestives and Jacob’s Crackers, is adding the new 15.65-metre trailers to its fleet, which will carry 60 pallets of biscuits instead of the previous 52 pallets.

The trailers will be liveried with UB brands such as the McVitie’s ‘Sweeet’ advertising campaign.

UB group supply chain director Kevin McGurk said:”These liveried trailers will make our company more efficient and more sustainable, and in a way that supports our major marketing campaign. They are a very visible example of how we are working across the organisation to make UB ever more competitive.”

In February UB brand McVitie’s also looked to increase its sustainability by launching its ‘Wrappers To Riches Collection Contest’, offering £500 worth of charity prizes to collectors who saved the most biscuit wrappers from UK landfill.

In 2006, UB launched its ‘Fewer and Friendlier Miles’ campaign, removing 20 million truck miles from UK roads and reducing transport CO2 emissions by 40%. UB-branded biscuits were purchased by 90% of UK households in 2012.
