Keen recycler Martin Wright took his cardboard to the local bring bank site at Morrisons in Shrewsbury last week (January 8). As he tipped his cereal packets and food packaging into the bin, his wedding ring slipped off into the sealed container.

Being a Sunday, the call centre helpline was closed so Wright tweeted about his loss. The tweet was picked up by Veolia, the waste contractors for Shropshire Council, who managed to cancel the early morning collection the next day.

Veolia’s operations manager Mark Hunter said: “The bin was due to be collected early on Monday morning but because of the tweet we managed to stop the bin being emptied. Without that, the ring and contents of the cardboard bin would have been sent off for recycling.”

Instead on Monday, Veolia employees climbed inside the bin to hunt for the ring and eventually found it inside a tea bag box.

Wright, who has only been married for 18 months said: “I am extremely grateful to the team at Veolia for answering my tweet on a Sunday and finding my wedding ring.”
