Veolia opens trade waste MRF in Birmingham

A material recovery facility (MRF) has opened in Birmingham in a bid to help businesses in the West Midlands boost their green credentials by sending less waste to landfill.

The Veolia Environmental Services facility, which officially opened on Tuesday (November 8), has the capacity to process up to 20,000 tonnes per year of recyclables, including card, paper, wood and plastics, and is expected to help local businesses reduce their carbon footprint by reducing the distance they need to send waste.

It is also expected to save organisations money by reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill, particularly as landfill taxes for certain types of waste is set to rise to approximately £72 per tonne next year.

The site will also operate a commercial mixed recycling collection, which will accept a wider range of recycled materials in a single container.

Commenting on the facility, Veolia Environmental Services managing director Paul Jackson, said: “This is an exciting time for all our customers as we further extend our recycling infrastructure network and invest in more facilities sized to help local businesses meet their recycling needs.

“By collecting mixed recyclates together we will also be providing a user-friendly service, diverting business waste away from landfill, and lessening their landfill tax costs which are set to increase year on year.”
