Water competition advice goes online

Businesses in Scotland will have a choice about their water supplier from next month and a new website has been launched to help them choose.

The water sector will open up to competition on April 1, when all businesses will be able to buy their water from a number of licensed suppliers and are no longer obliged to use Scottish Water.

To guide them through the changes, the Water Industry Commission for Scotland has launched a website promoting the benefits of the introduction of competition.

The Scotland on Tap site also includes details of the three new licensed suppliers – Satec, Business Stream and Aquavitae – and another supplier that is in the process of finalising its licence application.

Alan Sutherland, chief executive of the commission, said: “The website we have launched today makes choosing a water and sewerage provider as simple as possible.

“We want every customer to benefit from real choice.

“This tool will provide the means for Scottish customers to navigate the process and get the most out of the new framework.”

It is hoped the changes will encourage price competition and allow businesses to reduce their costs.

However, Scottish Water will still continue to supply water and wastewater services for domestic customers after April 1.
