Representatives from several Assembly Sponsored Public Bodies, the Welsh equivalent of Quangos, gathered at beacon of sustainability, the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) in Machynlleth, to learn how run their day to day operations in an environmentally sensitive manner.

The Welsh Assembly’s Presiding Officer, Lord Elis-Thomas, launched the special event which aimed to show that through effective environmental management, ASPBs could help make Wales a leader in sustainable development.

Organised jointly be the Environment Agency Wales and the Countryside Council for Wales, the day included presentations and workshops intended to help ASPB’s to limit their impact on the environment, ensure legal compliance and to prepare action plans which will develop the best environmental practice in all their activities.

Both EA Wales and the Countryside Council practice what they preach, with the both holding ISO14001 accreditation while the former is EMAS registered and the latter has been awarded level 5 of the Green Dragon standard.
