Wembley Stadium achieves international environmental certification

Wembley has become one of the first national stadiums to be certified to ISO 14001, the international standard for the implementation of Environmental Management Systems.

Since the Stadium opened in 2007, the management team has been working on implementing changes in the operation of the stadium and infrastructure to improve environmental performance.

Wembley managing director Roger Maslin says: “We are delighted that in the 90th anniversary of Wembley Stadium we are still delivering innovative initiatives and improvements in the stadium and its environment.

“As one of the first national stadia in the world to achieve this international standard we are immensely proud of being international leaders. Since the new Stadium opened we have been monitoring and assessing our environmental impacts and setting targets for improvement and it is great to have our systems externally certified.”

The work carried out by the stadium’s ‘Green Team’ has helped recycling rates on event days reach highs of 82%.

Electricity consumption was reduced by 32% from 2007-2012. Including reductions in gas consumption, total energy savings for the Stadium is close to £4m.

Building on its environmental certification, Wembley Stadium is committing to implementing ISO 20121, the international standard for event sustainability management systems by the end of 2015.
