Winners announced in 2009 edie awards

Edie's Awards for Environmental Excellence have been handed out at a glitzy ceremony in London's exclusive Hurlingham Club.

The awards recognise the top consultants in their field as well as highlighting environmental projects that are setting the standard for sustainability.

It was a good night for Enviros which took four of the nine consultancy awards, although it was pipped to the post for the top award, with Atkins winning three awards including being crowned Best Environmental Consultancy 2009.

ERM scooped the award for Corporate Social Responsibility while ADAS showed it was the consultant’s consultancy by winning the award for the Best Consultancy to Work For.

The project awards, selected by a panel of expert judges, saw winners from councils, corporations and consultancies.

BRE took the prize for the Best Construction Project with judges describing its Innovation Park as ‘mind-blowing’ and a glimpse of ‘the future today’.

Siemens Mobility was judged to have the best Green Corporate Initiative with its Green Mile scheme asking whether Planet Earth is on death row and training staff in how to address the company’s environmental impact.

May Gurney won the Waste & Recycling category, for its Sort It! In Somerset scheme which led to a surge in recycling and composting levels and corresponding drop in waste being sent to landfill in the county.

The Coal Authority clinched the Water & Wastewater award, for its innovative approach to protecting the water table of County Durham from contamination.

AEA took the prize for best Carbon Reduction project for its work with the London Development Agency (LDA) on the Green500 carbon mentoring scheme for large firms operating out of the capital.

Exeter City Council scooped the award for best Local Government Initiative for its Green Accord, an accessible, easy-to-implement environmental management system for organisations in Devon’s county town.
