World Water Day prompts call to action from business

Two organisations have marked World Water Day by joining forces to create an industry working group aimed at helping businesses integrate the challenges of carbon and water management.

Sustainability consultancy Best Foot Forward and the Water Footprint Network have issued a call to action for industry stakeholders to work with them in identifying practical solutions to a joined up way of thinking on water and carbon.

The organisations are asking businesses how they choose the best long-term solution when there are trade-offs between efficiency drivers, how they can address the challenges of scale and whether or not they can learn from existing best practice.

The outcome of the consultation will be a paper which offers the best practice and advice, including case studies from companies who have successfully managed their water and carbon use in an integrated way.

Water Footprint Network’s Kurt Unger said: “Bringing together the two global problems of unsustainable water use and climate change into one set of integrated solutions will quickly advance companies toward reducing their impacts and improving the sustainability of their products.”

However, Best Foot Forward’s Chris White said it was not easy for businesses to consider both carbon and water footprint together.

“We have some powerful capability and experience in this field but we don’t have all the answers so we’re asking business leaders to work with us to help come up with solutions,” he said.
