WRAP unveils plans to save economy almost £2 billion

The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) has revealed its plans to prevent three million tonnes of waste and save seven million tonnes of CO2.

The organisation will focus on waste prevention through recycling and reusing and supporting communities and business to do this.

WRAP says the targets, if reached, will save the UK economy £1.9 billion and stimulate a £130 million growth annually in the resource management sector.

The organisation’s priorities are to minimise resource use in products and buildings and to divert ‘priority materials’ from landfill.

It aims to do this by supporting more resource efficient construction and efficiency in the supply chain, tackling food waste, increasing plastics recycling and commercial and industrial waste recycling.

WRAP is setting delivery plans for the UK which will be used to measure results in achieving these goals.

Chief executive Liz Goodwin said: “Each of the four UK Governments recognises that resource efficiency is central to their environmental objectives which can boost the economy and are funding WRAP to help deliver that.

“To make this happen, our focus will be on minimising resource use and diverting waste from landfill. Two of the new areas we’ll be working in are reducing waste in the hospitality sector and encouraging more reuse of textiles.

“We’ll also be doing even more to support SMEs and we’ll continue to support anaerobic digestion plants being built to create energy and compost.”
