Launched on Monday, the Staff Engagement Toolkit includes range of professionally-designed materials that helps managers engage their staff, including training courses, quizzes and advice on designating Green champions.

The free resource also includes a series of training workshops and webinars for managers to involve staff in reducing waste.

Marissa Lippiatt, head of resource efficiency at Zero Waste Scotland said: “Everyone can help cut waste at work. Encouraging staff to be smarter with resources is crucial to better environmental performance, not to mention benefiting the bottom line.

“For example, if just one person printed 40 fewer sheets of paper a week, the amount of paper saved in a year could reach end-to-end across the entire length of the pitch at Hampden – six times!”

Win-win

Edinburgh Leisure, a non-profit company which manages sports and leisure facilities across the city on behalf of Edinburgh City Council, has been implementing the ideas found in the toolkit over the last year.

A more engaged staff has increased its recycling rate by 41%, saving £16,000 a year, and cutting CO2 emissions by 4% year-on-year.

Edinburgh Leisure sustainability manager Alan Hughes said: “The new tools and support from Resource Efficient Scotland will be a great way for organisations to get staff involved in changes and start saving money.”

Zero Waste Scotland also offers interest-free loans up to £100,000 to help Scottish businesses improve their resource efficiency.
