Australian water resources development has significantly contributed to national wealth

Senator Judith Troeth, addressing the Australian National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (ANCID), said that the irrigation industry should be proud of the innovation in its industry.

“In Australia’s predominantly dry and variable climate, settlement and economic growth have traditionally relied upon large scale damming, diversion, pumping and drainage of surface waters; conversion of wetlands; and the extraction of groundwater for irrigation, stock, domestic and industrial use,” said Troeth.

“ANCID assists in changing perceptions about some of these traditional means of management and stimulates development and application of improved management techniques,” added Troeth. “I believe Australians, particularly those in our cities, are insufficiently aware of where their food comes from and the importance of irrigation in that process.”
