The €2.25 million marine project, part funded by the EU’s Information Society Technologies (IST) programme, is developing an internet database to improve the management of European coasts and estuaries.
Collaborators in IMARQ (Information System for Marine Aquatic Resource Quality) will spend three years creating an on-line system for monitoring and mapping coastal and estuarine water quality in a user-friendly format, accessible to authorities and the public. The system will combine data obtained using different techniques, such as buoy sensors, hand-held data loggers and satellite imagery, in a process known as data fusion.
The UK Department of Trade and Industry is inviting UK organisations with innovative IST ideas to visit their website, UKISHELP, and apply for grants from the IST fund of €3.6 billion set up under the EU’s 6th Framework Programme.
