The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said that proposed decision provides for the operation of an incinerator with a maximum annual intake of 600,000 tonnes of residual non-hazardous waste.
Overall, the proposed decision contains more than 109 individual conditions which relate to how the site is managed and run in an environmental manner.
A statement read: “The EPA is satisfied that emissions from the facility, when operated in accordance with the conditions of the proposed licence, will not adversely affect human health or the environment and will meet all relevant national and EU standards.
“Best available techniques (BAT) will be employed at the facility.”
However, Friends of the Earth Ireland recently said that it was important for businesses and consumers to look at ways to reduce their levels of waste, rather than build facilities to clear it up.
Oisin Coghlan, Friends of the Earth director, said: “The real challenge now is to reduce the amount of waste arising in Ireland, which is one of the highest per person in the world.
“Moreover, Ireland should support the establishment of a mandatory EU target to recycle 50 per cent of municipal waste.”
