The Turner Foundation, based in Atlanta, Georgia, is particularly interested in awarding grants to organisations that are:
- protecting water-dependant habitats from new dams, diversions, and other large infrastructure projects;
- reducing wasteful water-use by conservation;
- promoting the allocation of water specifically for environmental purposes, such as habitat restoration and fish and wildlife protection;
- supporting efforts to improve public policies affecting water protection, such as initiatives to secure pollution prevention and habitat protection;
- reducing pesticide use; and
- strengthening the advocacy, outreach, and technical capabilities addressing the disproportionate use and location of toxic meterial in poor and rural areas.
The foundation is focusing on projects in the states of New Mexico, Monana, Colorado, Nebraska, both Carolinas, Georgia and Florida, though consideration will also be given to other US and international projects. Applications can be submitted continuously as the foundation meets four times a year. Support is not customarily provided for buildings, land, acquisition, endowments, or start-up funds, nor is there support for specific media projects such as books or films.
Past grants have included $40,000 to American Rivers for a public education campaign spotlighting the environmental, economic and social benefits of dam removal; and $10,000 to the Environmental Justice Fund to strengthen the national environmental justice network.
