The Euro 15 million funding for the project was announced yesterday (June 8) by Phil Hogan, minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government in Ireland.
In addition to a new treatment plant, two new reservoirs will be built at Rosmuc and Glenmore, Carraroe and a network and pipe-laying project will be initiated by the Costelloe Regional Water Supply Scheme.
The upgrade is being funded as part of the Euro 320 million Water Services Investment Programme 2010-2012.
Mr Hogan said: “My approval reflects the commitment in the programme for Government that our public drinking water supplies will deliver a reliable service that is 100% compliant with drinking water standards.
“In this case, the proposed scheme will ensure that consumers in the Costelloe area will have a high quality water supply that will have capacity to meet current and future needs.”
