Decarbonisation of heat in manufacturing: Resources to tackle the challenge.

Last updated: 29th June 2022

As part of our focus on heat decarbonisation in manufacturing, we have put together a collection of free resources to help you tackle this challenging but important area.

For manufacturers, decarbonisation of heat is a material contributor to the total scope 1 and 2 emissions of the business so is an important area to address in order to meet net zero targets. As well as helping clients to set net zero targets, we implement the projects that will help them reach their goals, so we have first hand experience of the real-world challenges that you face.

As part of our focus on heat decarbonisation in manufacturing, we have put together a collection of free resources to help you tackle this challenging but important area.

Webinar: Why is it so hard to decarbonise heat?

Using best practice examples we describe the heat decarbonisation approaches we take with our industry-leading clients.

Five practical considerations for heat decarbonisation

In an earlier article, we outlined 5 practical considerations for heat decarbonisation:

1.      Understand the quality of heat you need to supply to your operations (think “how hot?” not “how much?”).

2.      Work out your overall heat system efficiency and economics. In our experience, centralised steam generation plants can exhibit efficiencies as low as 50-60% when comparing primary fuel input to actual heating demand, making electrification a viable option.

3.      Plan early for the future of your co-generation plants.

4.      Explore local, low carbon sources of heat for example dearbonisation funding, low carbon district heating schemes and local developments for green gas, biomass, biomethane or hydrogen.

5.      Assess the risk of relying on renewable guarantees of origin.

Technology briefings to help you find the right fit for your decarbonising pathway.

We have produced a series of short webinars in which we review the common technologies that are considered in a decarbonisation pathway. Understand the application of the technology, its level of maturity and the commercial considerations.
