If you have corporate energy targets to meet, escalating energy consumption or have an annual energy bill in excess of £1m you need to employ an Energy Manager. Or do you?
Many organisations are very focussed on maintaining and reducing overheads, so even if a suitable candidate could be found, recruiting may not be an option particularly as the total employed cost is likely to be in the region of £100k per annum.
So what are the options?
You could of course continue to make the HSE or Environment Manager responsible for energy or spread the responsibility across several roles making busy people even busier and ensuring energy is not given the focus it needs. In our experience this will result in opportunities being lost and energy continuing to be wasted, not because of a flagrant disregard or lack of interest but due to conflicting priorities or simply because there just isn’t sufficient time available.
One realistic and affordable alternative is to employ a third party energy specialist with a broad range of skills and expertise that can be called upon as and when required to deal with all energy related matters. This can include everything from compliance issues, developing a Site Specific Energy Plan, the implementation of improvement opportunities to energy awareness training.
JRP currently provide this Energy Support Service to a number of organisations ensuring a real focus upon managing energy effectively and helping to prioritise actions and measures to reduce energy consumption and costs in a consistent and sustainable way.
With complete flexibility as to how and when this service is called upon and indeed how it is deployed, costs are minimised, resources optimised and targets are achieved.
