Net Zero Strategy & science-based targets (SBTs)

Last updated: 16th April 2024

An effective Net Zero strategy starts with a review of your carbon emissions, aligned to the internationally recognised Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. Specialists at Energise can will assist you in adopting a Net Zero Strategy with science-based targets at its core.

What does a Net Zero Strategy include?

An effective Net Zero strategy starts with a review of your carbon emissions, aligned to the internationally recognised Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. This carbon data should form the baseline of your Strategy. The GHG Protocol splits emissions into three scopes:

  1. Scope 1 – direct emission from combustion of fuels by facilities and vehicles
  2. Scope 2 – indirect emissions from purchased electricity, steam, heat, and cooling
  3. Scope 3 – indirect emissions from your value chain split into upstream and downstream emissions and into 15 categories.

WHy are science-based targets an important foundation?

Science-based targets are the best practice approach to reducing GHG emissions and limiting warming to 1.5oC. A science-based target shows how quickly your organisation needs to cut its GHG emissions to limit global warming to 1.5oC. They are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the globally recognised, UN-backed body which defines and promotes best practice in setting organisational carbon emissions targets.

We will guide you through the latest SBTi criteria and develop your science-based target to ensure it passes the validation.

HOW CAN ENERGISE CONSULTANTS HELP?

We will help you submit your letter of commitment, select a base year, and calculate your company’s GHG emissions in line with standards set by the GHG Protocol. We will also work closely with you to set the boundaries of your targets, choose your target years, and calculate the emissions reductions needed to reach net zero by your target year.
