Village Hotels awarded Green Tourism award for sustainable excellence across their entire portfolio

Last updated: 29th April 2020

The Green Tourism Awards, the largest and most established sustainable certification programme in the world, has awarded all 30 Village Hotels a Bronze-level Green Tourism Award. The prestigious award recognises the commitment of tourism businesses which are actively working to become more sustainable

Village Hotels has partnered with Carbon Intelligence since 2017 with a key focus on reducing energy use

The hotel group has saved over £1.4 million and over 5,000 tonnes of carbon since the beginning of 2017

Village Hotels, with the support of Carbon Intelligence, has worked hard over the last few years to develop a leading programme focused on reducing energy use through an innovative building optimisation programme and a UK wide employee engagement programme. It is fantastic for Village Hotels to achieve these awards, showing that sustainability can align with business value, profiting both the bottom line and the planet.

A Green Tourism Award recognises and applauds an organisation that works responsibly, ethically and sustainably, contributes to their community, is reducing their impact on the environment, and aims to be accessible and inclusive to all visitors and staff.

Village Hotels was graded by a qualified Assessor against a rigorous set of criteria, covering a range of areas such as energy and water efficiency and waste management. Village Hotels has been particularly focused on achieving positive change through the combination of both people and data, looking at smart build optimisation and running a portfolio-wide employee engagement programme. Both initiatives, as well as the overall excellence that Village Hotels delivers to its customers and community, have delivered huge savings and are clear reasons why Village Hotels was honoured this award.

The organisation has also investigated innovative solutions that can be brought into the portfolio. The breadth and depth of the work that the group is doing across its operations meant that it came as no surprise that Village Hotels scored well across the board.

Village Hotel’s Andrew O’Brien, Group Property Director said: “Our hotels work endlessly to improve the responsibility and sustainability of our organisation. The support from Carbon Intelligence on our energy programme has continued to unlock savings across the portfolio and the knowledge and delivery of the team has been excellent.”

Susie Chalk, Carbon Intelligence said: “It has been a pleasure to work Village Hotels and support them in developing a leading programme to become more sustainable and drive down energy use.”

Stuart Park, Lead Assessor Green Tourism said: “Village Hotels are off to a great start on their sustainability journey with all hotels achieving the Green Tourism BRONZE level of award at first assessment.

The group has demonstrated a commitment to sustainable practices with a number of positive actions observed. Each hotel was making significant effort to engage with their local community, supporting charities and organisations local to them, all throughout the country. Waste minimisation works effectively with recycling in place for the main waste streams, including food waste while there has been an emphasis on reducing single use plastics and packaging through the procurement process. Items have been reduced or replaced in housekeeping and guests’ toiletries as well as the onsite leisure facilities and coffee shop.

Village Hotels have also brought in Carbon Intelligence who has provided expert advice and a monitoring platform to keep track of utilities, primarily energy. They have been very influential in implementing or improving many of the ‘big ticket’ energy-related actions (such as lighting projects and Building Managements System), contributing greatly to the Green Tourism award for the hotels and no doubt ongoing energy and cost savings.

Following the initial assessment there are already a number of ideas and actions being worked on – it won’t be a surprise to see many of the hotels improving their award level in the near future.”
