Peterborough City Council has announced a shortlist of bidders for providing an energy-from-waste plant as well as improved recycling infrastructure and other services currently carried out in house.
The deals to operate, design and build a 65,000 tonne capacity incinerator will is between Kier, Shanks Group and Viridor.
The deal for a 100,000 tonne capacity recycling facility is between Greenstar UK, Shanks Group; and Viridor
To run the city’s waste collection, street cleaning, grounds maintenance and other operational services Amey LG, Enterprise Managed Services, HW Martin Waste; Kier; May Gurney; and Veolia ES (UK).
The short-listing follows an evaluation of pre-qualification questionnaires based on an announcement of the contracts in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) in April last year.
A spokesman for the city council said: “The new facilities are part of the city council’s Waste 2020 strategy that aims to recycle and compost more than 65% of household and garden materials and minimise reliance on landfill for disposal of residual waste.
“Peterborough achieved 48% recycling and composting last year from total municipal solid waste of around 100,000 tonnes.
“The city is designated as a growth area and total waste is expected to grow to almost 145,000 tonnes by 2029 to 2030.”
