Researchers have found healthy concentrations of Alexandrium tamarensis, the alga that causes red tides, in clean waters offshore in the Gulf of Maine. They believe Alexandrium blooms occur inshore when offshore water that meets ideal algal growth conditions gets blown in from the open sea.
