SMEs could save Euro 200m

The service, which helps small- and medium-sized enterprises identify areas where they could improve their energy efficiency, has already helped 500 firms.

Among the firms that have already participated, Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) has already discovered the potential for savings of over Euro 25m, with every firm able to make savings, often of more than 20%.

Brian Motherway, head of industry at SEI, said: “Energy is becoming central to business competitiveness and the long-term survival of many firms.

“Hundreds of businesses have already acted to tackle energy use and are reaping the rewards.

“As well as the immediate savings, these firms are also preparing themselves for a future where inefficient over-dependence on expensive fossil fuels will not be an option.”

The agency also hands out sustainable awards, sponsored by ESB, which reward excellence in energy management in the industrial, commercial and public sector.
