SPAIN: socialists reject water privatisation plans

In response to the ruling centre-right Partido Popular’s (PP) offer to work out the plan in negotiation with the PSOE, the socialists have demanded that the PP formally undertake that users of publicly funded infrastructure will not have to pay prices higher than those set by the current water law, reports El Pais.

The PSOE is also setting as a precondition, a change in the composition of the ‘state water companies’, which were set up to compensate falling public investment with private funds, to include the autonomous regions and water users.
