Episode 78 of the Sustainable Business podcast took place during edie’s Plastic Week – a content-driven campaign featuring exclusive events, reports and interviews examining the state-of-play regarding business efforts to combat single-use plastics.


For this episode, senior reporter Sarah George caught up with Sky’s Group Head of Inspirational Business & Sky Ocean Rescue Fiona Ball to hear about the company’s newest plastic-free café.

Then, Sarah sits down with Tideway’s Community Investment Manager for Corporate Responsibility and Reporting Social Value Kelly Bradley to discuss Tideway’s partnership with Thames21 to help clean the Thames River.

Following that, content editor Matt Mace sat down with the University’s Sustainability Programme Officer Lucy Stuart. In November 2018, The University of Leeds and Leeds University Union pledged to eliminate all single-use plastic items, including coffee cups, disposable cutlery and straws, from their operations by 2023; the interview explores how the University has successfully removed more than one million pieces of single-use plastic.

As supporting partners for our Plastics Week and this episode, Nestlé put forward its UK & Ireland head of sustainability Anna Turrell, who also appeared on online plastics event on Thursday (16 January).

This 25-minute interview explores Nestle’s progress against its targets, as well as looking into the broader need for businesses to educate consumers on the impacts of plastics alternatives and push to fix the whole waste management system. Turrell uses the interview to reflect on the news from this week that Nestlé has committed £1.59bn to source food-grade recycled plastics to be used in its packaging, alongside a pledge to cut the amount of virgin plastics it sources by a third.
