Telemetry teaching aid

The Cirrus was developed in collaboration with universities to meet the need for a practical means of experimenting with radio and demonstrating its potential. Although simple in concept, it provides a robust and flexible platform for radio experimentation. Based on a standard Wood and Douglas radio module it can be connected to a PC or PIC for remote control, enabling the development of a telemetry system with minimal hardware prototyping. Cirrus uses the popular SX500 commercial range transceiver and a V23 modem as the radio link. These are mounted on the board with a matching antenna which provides 16 selectable radio channels. The main board has eight digital input and output ports and one analogue circuit. The digital ports have on-board switches for input selection and LED indicators for output status, open with relay contacts. The analogue port is driven by a potentiometer with an input range of 0–5V, and the input level is displayed on a bar graph indicator. Transmission of a change of input level can be set to continuous, manual or automatic.
