The document has been developed by WRAP to provide clarity on issues such as the planning process, consultation requirements, permitting regulations and feedstock suitability.
Information is also given on how operators can best manage the energy outputs and residues from thermal treatment processes, such as air pollution control residues and incinerator bottom ash.
WRAP’s head of organics and EfW Ian Wardle said that despite the waste hierarchy, waste has a valuable contribution to make.
“Not everything can be recycled and recovering energy from unavoidable residual waste may be preferable to landfill.
“While it is still a developing industry, this suite of guidance will help to build knowledge and provide clear and concise information to those businesses that are exploring EfW as a treatment option.”
The document is separate from the delayed EfW guidance that WRAP is involved with on behalf of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) which will look at the policy case for energy recovery in relation to the waste hierarchy.
