Belgium landfill to be mined in pioneering venture

Advanced Plasma Power (APP) and global waste management firm Group Machiels have set up a joint venture to carry out the ‘closing the circle’ project at the Remo Milieubeheer NV landfill site in Houthalen-Hechteren, Belgium.

More than 16 million tonnes of waste is currently stored the landfill and it is estimated that 45% of this can be recycled as material, with the residue processed through APP’s Gasplasma(R) technology.

An energy plant will be constructed on-site using up to five Gasplasma(R) units, with a net electrical power of 75-100MW. The energy produced will be fed into the national electricity grid in Flanders.

The Gasplasma(R) process is a gasification and plasma conversion technology that converts the waste stream into a clean hydrogen-rich syngas and a vitrified recyclate product called Plasmarok(R) that can be used as a building material or replacement aggregate.
