Cash reward for dead flies

A local authority in China is offering residents a bounty of approximately 3p for every dead fly they hand in.

The bizarre offer is part of a strategy to improve public hygiene in Luoyong city and officials reported that they had received 2,000 flies on the first day of the scheme.

Locals have embraced the scheme, with some travelling to landfill sites to hunt their insect prey.

The authorities say that they believe the incentive scheme will prove more effective than fining those who fail to keep the city clean.
