CENTRAL & EASTERN EUROPE: environmental improvement is one of top energy challenges for accession countries

Speaking at the Baltic Business Conference in Riga, Latvia, de Palacio argued in favour of energy market liberalisation and said that more co-operation between the EU and candidate countries should aim to increase security for nuclear power stations in Central and Eastern Europe.

Despite de Palacio’s pro-market liberalisation message, she was at pains to state her support for environmental protection measures and specifically mentioned a need to expand renewable energy generation so that it commands a greater share of total energy production.
