DEFRA invites comments on draft air pollution papers

DEFRA and the Devolved Administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are also seeking comments on how the UK will meets its commitments under the EU National Emission Ceilings Directive. DEFRA’s National Strategy to Combat Acidification, Eutrophication and Ground-level Ozone aims to limit the four pollutants responsible: sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds and ammonia.

The National Emission Ceilings Directive sets annual emission levels for the four pollutants for the UK from 2010 onwards. Based on current projections for 2010 DEFRA expects the UK to meet its commitments, but the strategy will need to be updated and revised as emission projections for 2010 are refined. A revised strategy will be published for consultation in 2006.

Interested parties have until 8th November 2002 to respond to both papers.
