EC welcomes ozone ruling

In a statement issued yesterday, the body said the new regulations reinforce measures on the illegal trade and remaining uses of substances that deplete ozone, including hydrochlorofluorocarbons.

Additionally, it confirms the ban on the use of methyl bromide from next year and updates existing laws on the ozone layer’s protection in light of new scientific developments.

Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas said: “The new legislation should help the ozone layer recover from 2050 onwards and also contribute to our efforts to mitigate climate change.”

He added the introduction of the rules further restrict the use of ozone-depleting substances in the European Union, a move the expert welcomed.

The announcement comes ahead of the Energy Ireland Conference, which is due to take place at Croke Park Conference Centre in Dublin between June 10th and 11th.
