The deal will see M&S purchase around 30,000MWh per year from facilities where its food waste is processed via anaerobic digestion – enough to power 20 M&S Simply Food stores. The agreement will initially run for two years.
M&S’ comprehensive Plan A sustainability programme includes the ambitious targets of using 100% renewable energy and sending zero waste to landfill. Therefore, says Marks & Spencer head of energy supply and risk Giacinto Patellaro, the deal ticks two boxes for the retailer: “Having advocated the use of AD technology since the launch of our sustainability programme, Plan A, back in 2007, we’re now seeing in practice how these deals are helping M&S to maintain two of our targets: to procure 100% renewable electricity and send zero waste to landfill.”
This is the second PPA M&S has signed with waste management firm Shanks, the first having been agreed in 2012.
