Some 15 offences were reported in 33 inspections from 25-27 January, in relation to the maximum number of animals permitted or the storage or disposal of wastes. The French Environment Ministry says the surprise inspections were intended to show its “clear intent to enforce regulations on pig farming, so that the industry returns to a sustainable economic equilibrium while respecting the environment.”
Intensive livestock rearing has been cited as one of the principal causes of nitrate pollution of ground and surface waters, particularly in northern France.
