Its latest achievement in working towards this target will be its switch to 100% renewable gas to power its manufacturing plant in Scherpenzeel, located in the Netherlands, from next January.
The carpet tile manufacturer has signed a contract for Eneco to supply gas produced using certified green waste from the food industry, provided by fish processor A. van de Groep.
As a result of this contract, Interface will receive all of its gas via Eneco, amounting to 2.3 million cubic metres per year, which is equivalent to the amount of gas used by 750 households annually.
According to Interface Europe’s senior vice president of operations Ton van Keken, by using a combination of green energy and biogas, its European headquarters and factory in Scherpenzeel will become almost CO2 neutral.
“Waste, in this case from the food and fish industries, will be used in a way that benefits business,” he said.
Interface was one of the first companies to publicly commit to sustainability, when it made a pledge in the mid-90s to eliminate its impact on the environment by 2020.
